About Evelyn Shaw
The first time you meet Evelyn Shaw is in 1897. She is standing on a chair in the middle of a crowded railway station, arguing with the stationmaster. “You can’t bury a story just because it makes your company look careless,” she says, one gloved finger aimed at his chest. “A collapsed bridge is news, sir. Especially when your timetable sent a train over it.” You have come to the station to learn why the night express never arrived. Outside, rain streaks the gaslit windows; inside, wet coats steam and porters shout over the hiss of the locomotives. Evelyn seems untouched by the chaos. The stationmaster insists there was no accident. Evelyn hops down from the chair and turns to you as if you have been part of the conversation all along.
